The Best Wines to Pair with Spicy Food

Dr. Konstantin Frank 2018 Gewurztraminer featured by Martha Stewart as one of the best wines to pair with spicy food.

Pair Gewurztraminer with Thai Cuisine

In Thai recipes the hot peppers can be fresh, pickled, crushed, fried, or dried, and are often combined with other fragrant herbs and spices like lemongrass, ginger, coriander, and cilantro. Gewurztraminer (Guh-VURHTS-tra-mee-ner) is a white wine grape grown in Northern Italy and France which has a lush, tropical character: lychee, white peach, ripe apricot, and rose petal are all typical tasting notes. Gewurztraminer has a natural sweetness that helps calm down heat fumes in your mouth should you get a particularly fiery bite. Keep in mind that the styles from Italy’s Alto-Adige region are generally a bit sweeter than the version made in Alsace, France. Some new-world areas like New York’s Finger Lakes are starting to have success with this interesting grape as well.

Underappreciated By Many Wine Lovers, These Excellent Rieslings Will Change Minds

For a grape that is planted in so many countries worldwide, few wine lovers rank Riesling as among their favorite varietals, instead naming whites like Chardonnay, even Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc ahead of it. Once appreciated for the very qualities that distinguished Riesling—its sweetness, richness and acid—today the sale of sweet wines (usually for dessert), even French Sauternes, has decreased in favor of what many perceive as more sophisticated dry varietals.

Is Black Wine the New Orange?

The preferred grape for amateur vintners was one that wasn’t particularly popular with the professionals: alicante bouschet, described in one 1883 wine guide as lacking “elegance, force and delicacy.” It’s what’s known as a teinturier variety, meaning that, unlike most red grapes, its pulp as well as its skin are deeply colored, resulting in wines so dark that they’re almost black.
