By producing exceptional wines, and showing what Riesling could do in the Finger Lakes, he earned his spot in the canon of trail-blazing American winemakers. All these years later, the wines are still examples of excellence in American wine.

Fabulous Wines from the Finger Lakes, New York
The wine region is still young even though they have been growing grapes since the late 1800 for Taylor, a major distributor at the time. The first experiences with vinifera such as Riesling started after prohibition was over in the 1950’s with researches conducted by Dr.Konstantin Frank. This is when wine activity as we know it today started for the region, supported by the 1976 New York Farm Winery Act which allowed winemakers to sell their wines to customers directly from their vineyards.

Let the Wine Do the Talking This Thanksgiving
The ancient white grape Rkatsiteli is native to the Republic of Georgia but also grown in the Finger Lakes region of New York thanks to Dr. Konstantin Frank, the man also credited with making Riesling commercially viable in the region. The late Dr. Frank—once denounced as something of a mad man and only later dubbed a genius—felt certain Rkatsiteli would grow well in the Finger Lakes. It’s become a signature wine for his winery near Hammondsport, N.Y., along with their Riesling of course. This is a crisp, dry, fairly light bodied white with citrus and herb notes, a bit like a Chablis with the same food-friendly attributes.

Travel + Leisure: Why New York Is Becoming One of America’s Best States for Wine Lovers
I decided to kick off my wine tasting in the place where quality bottlings in the Finger Lakes got started — Dr. Konstantin Frank, on the western shore of Keuka Lake. In the 1950s, this winery’s eponymous founder proved that the region could grow classic grape varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir. I skipped the main tasting room and headed down the road to my reservation at the serene 1886 Reserve Room, which offers a more personal experience, as well as older vintages and food pairings.

It isn't an overstatement to say that Dr. Konstantin Frank revolutionized winemaking and ignited the "Vinifera Revolution" in the Finger Lakes. Armed with a Ph.D in viticulture and an innovative mind, Dr. Frank immigrated to the United States from Europe in 1951. Naysayers told him that the region's cold climate made it impossible to cultivate Vitis Vinifera varieties from Europe but Dr. Frank proved them wrong.

Beyond Napa: 7 Emerging American Wine Regions to Visit Now
Anyone who has lived in upstate New York is familiar with the “lake effect,” or, how the region’s long, narrow north-south Finger Lakes affect weather patterns. For grape growers, proximity to these lakes means more temperate (albeit snowy) winters and cooler summers. The region is perhaps best known for its Rieslings, but more and more wineries are making world-class Pinot Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer. It’s an easy weekend trip from New York City, and tasting rooms abound—for starters, check out Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, Bloomer Creek, Anthony Road, Fox Run, and Konstantin Frank. Pair any of those with a stay at Inns of Aurora, and you’ve got a fabulous wine-filled weekend.

"101 Best Wineries in America"
The Daily Meal’s list of “101 Best Wineries in America” was compiled by top restaurant owners, wine writers and sommeliers in the United States.  We are honored that our winery made the list!  According to the article, “Whites remain, as they have always been, the winery’s strong suit — Sacramento grocer and wine and food expert Darrell Corti, a Daily Meal Council member, describes them as ‘impeccable whites with history behind them’ — and the gewürztraminer, pinot gris, and grüner veltliner, among other wines, are all dependably good, as is the aromatic, exotic rkatsiteli, made from a grape Frank grew familiar with when he made wine as a young man in Soviet Georgia. Among the winery’s reds, lemberger and old-vine pinot noir seem to do best. Two associated wineries, the sparkling-only Château Frank and the lower-priced Salmon Run, have been added to the family.”

"5 Can't Miss Wines"
Fortune Magazine recently made a list of 5 “can’t miss wines” and included the Dr. Frank Grüner Veltliner among their favorites. “New York’s Finger Lakes often gets overlooked by oenophiles, but the region puts out some amazing Rieslings. Dr Frank’s is the winery that put the Finger Lake on the map for many wine drinkers and is still one of the top vintners in the area. The Riesling is good, but the $22 Veltliner, an Austrian grape that flourishes in upstate New York, is better. It’s akin to a Sauvignon Blanc with a dry citrus mouthfeel. And it’s wonderful with chicken or seafood.”

"Best U.S. Wine Destinations For Wine Lovers"
Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery was mentioned in an April 2017 article by CBS News. "“About two million years ago, in a landscape sculpted by slow moving glacial sheets of ice, 11 long and narrow lakes were carved out. In upstate New York, the shores of these clear and deep inland lakes presented a cold weather opportunity for cultivation of “Vitis vinifera” European grape varietals. This attracted a mid-20th century viticulturist immigrant, Dr. Konstantin Frank, who used methods studied in his native Ukraine to plant on the west side of Keuka Lake. Vineyards throughout Finger Lakes AVA’s 120 wineries are often compared to those in Germany’s Rhine River region, where Riesling is also king. It’s a classic European grape that, shielded by the lake shores, withstands cold and snowy winters, producing award-winning sweet and dry wines. Other notable Finger Lakes varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc Gewürztraminer, and sparkling wines.”

Dr. Frank Dry Riesling Included Among "Wines to Know" by Karen MacNeil
"Today, the winery's experience shows, especially with temperamental varieties like riesling. The Konstantin Frank rieslings have a tactile sense of aliveness-a kind of kinetic edginess that makes them super refreshing. They are also delicate, and laced with spiciness. But more than any other quality, they demonstrate fruity concentration without weightiness" -MacNeil

Where to Eat and Drink in the Finger Lakes
"Overlooking Keuka lake and off the main wine route, you'll stumble upon one of the oldest wineries in the region. It was founded by Dr. Konstantin Frank, who ignited the "Vinifera Revolution" in the 1960s after discovering that cold climate wasn't a barrier to growing European grape varieties and that the problem was actually the lack of proper rootstock. In 1962, he founded Vinifera Wine Cellars and quickly became famous for spectacular Rieslings. Today, the winery is still family run, by Konstantin's grandson, Frederick Frank and his daughter Meaghan Frank."
